Ukraine Rejects New Peace Proposal Viewed as Favoring Russia

Efforts to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia have faced another setback after the Ukrainian government rejected a newly drafted peace proposal prepared jointly by the United States and Russia. The document, delivered as an initial outline, was viewed by Kyiv as a plan that undermines national interests and contradicts Ukraine’s sovereign rights.

According to diplomatic sources, the draft included several conditions considered highly unfavorable for Ukraine. Key elements of the proposal called for the handover of territories currently under conflict, a significant reduction of Ukraine’s military capabilities, official recognition of the Russian language in selected regions, and the suspension of Kyiv’s long-standing aspiration to join NATO.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the proposal does not represent a genuine path to peace but rather a form of “capitulation.” He emphasized that Ukraine will not accept any agreement that sacrifices its territorial integrity or weakens its defensive capacity. The government warned that the plan could create long-term vulnerabilities and potentially lead to renewed aggression in the future.

The rejection was reinforced by several European leaders who insisted that Ukraine must remain fully in control of any negotiation process. They stressed that no external pressure should force Ukraine into an unequal settlement, especially after more than three years of resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Tensions escalated further following a recent Russian airstrike that killed multiple civilians in western Ukraine. Kyiv argued that the attack demonstrates Russia’s lack of genuine commitment to peace, making the public even more skeptical of proposals that demand significant concessions from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Washington has tried to maintain open communication channels with both sides, although the draft received criticism for appearing too accommodating to Moscow’s interests. International analysts noted that future talks must be approached cautiously to avoid undermining global support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.

With the proposal now formally rejected, prospects for renewed peace negotiations remain uncertain. Ukrainian officials reiterated that true peace can only be achieved through a complete halt to Russian aggression and the full restoration of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The conflict is expected to continue until a fair and balanced framework acceptable to both nations is established.
