Russian Teen Girl Jailed for Singing Anti-War Songs in the Street
An 18-year-old Russian girl named Diana Loginova has drawn global attention after a court in Saint Petersburg extended her jail time by 13 days for performing anti-war and anti-Kremlin songs in public. Known by her stage name “Naoko,” Diana is a street musician who often plays guitar and sings with her small band Stoptime.
The case began after a video of Diana’s street performance went viral on Russian social media. Authorities claimed her songs “discredited the Russian Armed Forces,” a charge based on laws introduced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These laws have been widely criticized by human-rights groups for being used to silence public dissent.
According to Reuters and Euronews, this is not the first time Diana has been detained for her performances. Her latest arrest highlights how the Russian government increasingly targets young artists who express political views through music. Although her lyrics did not directly attack the government, officials said the songs could “create anti-state sentiment.”
Amnesty International and other rights organizations condemned her detention, calling it a violation of freedom of expression and artistic rights. They stated that Diana should be protected as an artist, not punished for singing about peace. Supporters have flooded social media with messages of solidarity, though many posts were later removed by Russian internet authorities.
The Russian government has rejected the criticism, saying the law is needed to maintain “national stability” and prevent “harmful propaganda.” Political observers, however, believe the case reflects a broader effort to suppress young voices who question state policies.
Diana Loginova’s case has become a powerful symbol of the shrinking space for free speech in Russia. Over the past two years, dozens of journalists, artists, and activists have faced similar punishment. Analysts describe this trend as a new “era of creative repression,” where art and music are censored for political reasons.
For the global community, Diana’s story is a reminder that the fight for free expression is far from over. She may be just one young woman with a guitar, but her courage has inspired people worldwide to stand up for the freedom to create, perform, and speak without fear.
